We spent five days in Salta. For almost the entire time the weather was beautiful. Cool to cold nights, warm, crystal clear sunny days with a light breeze. Perfecto! The last day turned on us though. Freezing temperatures and cloudy dreary skies. It all worked out ok because we had tours of the area scheduled for the first three days, the days with great weather. We needed a day to recover after the tours and that ended up being the cold day. The days we had a tour we were up at six am out the door by seven and did not return until sometime between eight and nine pm. The cold day was a welcome day to stay in and keep the heat on.
Salta is a good sized city nestled in the center of the mountain ranges. We could see snow on the top of some distant mountains when we arrived by plane. The town had several large churches we could see from our hotel. There are several parks with trees, flowers benches and a grassy area. We had a steak here that had to be 10 oz in size. We needed to look for vegetarian meals for the next few days after that steak. It tasted great but filled the plate.
The first tour was to Cafayate. This is the wine area for this region of Argentina. The larger wine production area in Argentina is in Mendoza. We left the city of Salta and heading up into the mountains. We stopped for photos on the way to the winery. The color range of the mountains varied from a very bright red color with some hues of green and yellow. Our guide said the shades of red and green were different forms of iron, ferrous and ferric. Yellow was calcium and sulfur. A river runs through the valley floor year round. This time of year is winter here and the dry season so the water level is very low. The winery was not the highlight of the trip. The local worker only spoke Spanish so we lost a lot in the translation. She also spoke so fast we may not have been able to keep up even in English.
The following day we went to Humamarca. On the way we stopped at Purmamarca. This area is the area known for the hill of seven colors. Very, very beautiful and unique. The town is quaint, quiet and full of artesian style gifts.
The final tour was nice partially because we only had four people on the tour. The other two tours had about twenty people. This tour was to Cachi. We made our way to the small town by winding our way up the mountains on paved and dirt roads. The views were amazing and heart pounding at the same time. The sheer drop off the road was straight down. Our guide said the amount of accidents off the road has decreased in recent years because the road is wider now than in the past. We reached the highest point of 13,000 feet. The only symptoms were a little lightheadedness.
The biggest problems we have had are dinner. The Argentinians start dinner at 8:30. That means you don't eat until about 9:30. We have had to get creative looking for somewhere that serves food, not coffee and a roll , at an earlier time. Second issue, dry lips. The humidity is around 10% today. Our skin has never been this dry.
Onward to Cordoba, college town.
