We spent a few days in Lima before we made our way down the coast to Ica. Lima is typical of a big city: Crowded, lots of traffic and blowing horns, a beautiful historic center, very poor areas and very upscale areas. Our travel agent, Maria from Over Peru, picked us up at the airport. We quickly made our way through the bad part of town near the airport. The people here are very poor, the homes partially finished. We found out the people do not pay taxes on unfinished homes so this is the normal constant state in this area. We do not know if this is true for other areas but partially finished buildings with rebar sticking out of the roof is very common everywhere. We read you need to make your way through this area quickly with you valuables in a trunk or out if sight. Apparently, this is true as our agent went the long way to keep from stopping in front of the homes. We arrived before check in time at our hotel so Maria treated us to a fantastic lunch at a place near our hotel. We have really missed having a good salad in Argentina so this was a fantastic place with a large selection of salads and rows of desert selections. We checked in to Allpa Hotel in Miraflores. The hotel is nice with large rooms a large bed and a nice location. We did not stay in the historic center in Lima. We had dinner less than one block from our hotel at one of the famous Astrid and Gaston restaurants called Panchita. The food was very good. Steve had swordfish and I had the aji Gallina, chicken.
We went on a half day city tour to the Plaza Mayor where we saw the changing of the guard at the Presidential Palace, took a tour of a museum, saw the Huaca Pucllana pyramid ruins and the Covenant of San Francisco. The highlight of the church tour is the catacombs below the church. The catacombs were started in 1546 and contain 75,000 bodies of priests, located in separate areas, and mass burials for servants and commoners. Remember, Lima is an earthquake zone so the survival of these catacombs with the vaulted ceiling is amazing. As we continued through Peru, many buildings use the vaulted ceilings technology. Our city tour ended with lunch at Mango's, a restaurant situated on the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean. This area is very upscale with a mall built right on the coast line and restaurants overlooking the ocean. The food here was fantastic with tables of local dishes and two desert tables. Steve said the Ceviche was to die for. We had a chicha morado, a drink made from purple corn and a pisco sour. After lunch, Maria took us to the LarcoMar museum. This is the largest private collection of Pre-Columbian art. We enjoyed a personal and informative tour. The final room contained sexually explicit art.
Maria also gave us a personal tour Lima including the US embassy, the area called New Lima, the high rise area outside of the city with green yards and a golf course.
Maria also took is to the magic circuit of water. A park filled with many different water fountains and a laser and water show in the center piece. One of the fountains holds the Guinness record for the highest propelled stream at 250 feet and is called the Magic Fountain. After the fountain show. We went to a dinner with local dancing. The food was good and allowed us to try local dishes and the dancing was beautiful. Make sure you check the photo galleries for pics.
