Arequipa, Peru

We used the same bus service from Nazca to Areauipa. The bus left at three pm and arrived at one am. We were quickly taken from the bus terminal to our hotel. Our room was located on the fourth floor. The hotel had no elevator. This would not be a big deal but Arequipa is located at 7761 feet above sea level. We carried our fifty pound suitcases up four flights of stairs in the middle of the night at this altitude and dropped into bed.

Arequipa is second behind Lima for inhabitants and is called the "white city". When you see the city it is obvious why it had this name. Many of the buildings were constructed using volcanic sillar stone. The town is really beautiful with its white sillar buildings and the snow covered mountains in the background. The town is easy to navigate and walking to restaurants, historic buildings and museums was very convenient. Our hotel had a great view from the roof of the town, the monastery and the three volcanoes. We went in inside the monastery known as a city within a city.

The monastery, the covenant of Santa Catalina, was founded in 1579. In the past, 200 nuns were sequestered here but now houses only twenty. Back in the beginnings of the monastery the wealthy families paid a dowery to have one of their daughters enter the monastery . It was considered a privilege. The houses the wealthy nuns lived in were large and her slaves were nuns from poor families. This was not a life of poverty for the wealthy nuns. The inside of the monastery was very dark and cold but the outside very bright and beautiful. A very limited number of hours a day were allowed for socializing outside. The families could visit for one hour each month. Gifts could be given like furniture, china etc. when the nuns passed away they were buried on the property and the immediate family could be present for the funeral but they were not allowed back afterward. At a later date the Pope ordered that the nuns would live communally. They gave up their large homes inside the walls and slept in a cot in a single large room and the slaves were freed. It seems, the numbers dropped from this time onward, at least here. The modern nuns work communally but have separate sleeping quarters and they watch modern tv. I am not sure what they can find to watch that is acceptable.

We also visited the museum that holds the "Ice maiden of Ampato" , Juanita. She was discovered in 1995 by Johan, hence the name Juanita. The eruption of a nearby volcano allowed for the discovery of her 560 year old body and archeologists estimate that she was 13 years old when sacrificed. She was found at almost 21,000 feet. Her body perfectly preserved in ice except for her face. She rolled from her burial position and into a crater and here face was exposed to the sun. She was sacrificed to the gods at a young age. It is thought that from almost birth she was raised to be a sacrifice at some time. She made the long journey from Cusco to the mountain. The film we watched said she may have been effected by the altitude and give some strong chicha, an alcoholic drink made from corn, to drink. Then a blow to the head killed her. This was an honor for the family for their children to be chosen as a sacrifice.
