Sail inside atoll to Northwest pass on Makemo
19 July 2014 | Northwest Pass Makemo Atoll, Tuamotus, French Polynesia
Steve
Just arrived at NW pass on Makemo. Plan to exit pass on slack tomorrow at 5:30 then sail to Kauehi. Should be about 10-12 hour sail and arrive early then next morning.
First time sailing inside an atoll. Kind of amazing. Perfectly smooth water, probably averages around 130 feet deep, but there are Bommies here and there that you have watch for visually. They may only be 30 feet in diameter rising from the bottom to inches below the surface. Not charted for the most part. You have to be careful to do it during the daylight when the sun is over your shoulder. Once it passes overhead and in front of you, the visibility into the water is gone and you can't see to avoid them. Similar to what we learned years ago sailing the Bahamian waters, but as I mentioned above, much different in the way these towers come off the bottom right to the surface.
