Well, my baby is another year older today. And for that, last night, we had a wonderful dinner with Valentine and Gaston hosting a dozen cruisers for dinner. We had the crew of Sauvage and their five guests, the crew of Killian and Kim and myself. We had France, Tuamotus, Florida, US, NYC and a pair from Hawaii at the dinner table. The meal was awesome, baked lobster, BBQ lobster, coconut bread, coconut rice and poisson crue (raw fish, in lime and coconut milk) and finally coconut cake. There were hula lessons and some great music till 10 PM, which in cruiser world is really, really late. There were, in addition to Valentine and Gaston, four other locals who made up the band, playing guitar, ukulele and spoons.
We just arrived back on North Star after our first dive here. (wind has been north-northeast with large breakers on the dive areas) We dove a site called Yellow Dog and it was awesome. A little rough still with the waves, but once in the water we were on a wall that we're told goes over 400 feet straight down. Loren (sp?) dove with Kim and I and he drifted off to around 150 feet. I stayed above 100 feet with Kim holding higher. The visibility was probably 150 feet. Amazing considering the wave action of the last few days. We saw our first large anemone with it's 2 resident clownfish swimming in and out of the tentacles. Myriads of other fish. Kim had a snapper take a little nibble on her. Upon surfacing Kim said well, happy birthday to me, that was an awesome dive. (Note to Sherry and Dave on Soggy Paws, the buoys on all the dive sites are now gone and moorings are now 700 francs instead of 500. Your compendiums have been such a help and the coordinates dead on)
Here at Anse Amyot, there is no internet. So this is coming via SSB radio link to Hawaii then via regular internet from there. There is no television here either. There is a phone booth, but it hasn't worked in quite a while they say, so they are borrowing the solar power from it. Even missing all those really important things, we had a great time eating, singing and dancing last night. Followed by a perfect dive today. Not a bad birthday as Kim said. We are probably going to leave on Saturday for Apataki if we get some wind as forecast. There we're told we'll have some internet and a couple of magasins (stores).
