We made it through our two nights at sea
14 October 2010 | Cresent City, California
Donna / Sunshine now but heavy fog and mist for the past 24 hrs.
Exactly 48 hours after leaving Tillamook Bay, we made it into Cresent City, CA. The Coast Guard gave the OK to leave the harbor at 2pm and we crossed it at 3pm (with our life preservers on, of course). (Yes, Beth, I think it is a first.)
Cresent City is called a 'harbor of refuge' because it is so easy to get into when the seas are bad. We fueled up, topped off our water and are catching some internet sitting at the fuel dock before we go out to anchor in the harbor.
We went 286 miles and again, it was nice to have three people to do watches and sail changes. I keep saying, "Don't get used to that, it will change!" Nathan only 'signed on for 3-4 weeks.' Who wants to come take his place??
We motored 25 of our 48 hours sailing. The winds was 5 to 15 knots, mainly from the north, and we could have kept going but we needed fuel after leaving Seattle, our propane tank was empty and needed to be changed and we aren't in a big hurry. We kept a reef in the main most of the way for ease of jibing, etc. so we didn't set any records but we did see 9.98 max speed on this trip and 10.2 on the last leg. We don't have any complaints on how the boat is sailing!
We didn't see any dolphins or whales on our way down but we caught a 25 lb. tuna just hours before we made it into Cresent City. Glad to be in our first CA port even if its still a bit chilly!
