Great time with Uncle Ray
23 February 2016 | Kaunakakai, Molokai
Molokai was a super 6 day visit . We mentioned that Molokai had a donation only bus so when we had a chance, we used it to go see Uncle Ray, part of a long time family of Molokai. Our friends on the big island knew we were visiting and got us connected. We got to sit in an open air hale right beside the family fishpond and tell story. He teaches people Hawaiian culture and vocabulary so it was fun to see where he did that also. Thanks again to April and Suki for sharing their family with us.
We love the small town feel of Kaunakakai and buying food and crafts from the locals.
This is whale season so a boat who came in was able to find some whales and record the whale song, something one of the boaters had done before in other spots.
The water was pretty churned up so no good snorkeling but a nice secure harbor when the winds picked up to 25 knots the one day. The anchorage is pretty small and the reef isn't far enough away but we held fine and were being blown away from the reef.
We left as planned on Sunday heading for Maui.
