The Breeze and Charm
28 April 2010 | Portsmouth North Ferry Landing
Well, we didn't pass Milepost Zero. We're a half a mile away, tucked into the North Ferry Landing at Portsmouth. It's a free tie-up and supposedly you can stay overnight. We'll see. We left the Dismal after a casually late locking courtesy of Robert, the North dockmaster. He wouldn't let us leave until we'd finished the danish, blueberry muffins and fruit that he'd brought for us!
As we pulled out of the swamp and made the right turn up the Elizabeth River, we had our first overboard drill. I had stuck my head out to close up the enclosure and my hat went sailing. So around we went and in short order the hat was scooped up in the trusty crabnet, aka cat retrieval system. I'm sure the boat behind us thought we were nuts, but I didn't want to lose my Tilley hat.
Once in Portsmouth, we tied up in the ferry landing with Tropical Breeze not far behind. We spent the rest of the afternoon touring Portsmouth's old town. It sure has changed since my Grandmother lived there in the 50s and 60s. Back then, it was worn and run down. It's now one of the posh areas to live in and the restored homes are quite lovely. I tried to find my Grandmother's house, but they all kind of looked alike and the address has faded from my memory.
We went back to Tropical Breeze, for two batches of Dave's popcorn and to make dinner plans. We picked a little pub near High Street and after much deliberating, selected their special burgers and fries. They were almost worth the calories!
