22 October 2012 | Tuckahoe Point, Alligator River
All good things come to an end as we waved fond farewell to our escort, KK, this morning. Nancy, Karl, and Karibbee Kat had to head back north this morning and we are continuing our adventure south. It was fun sharing the trip for a few days and especially nice of Karl to perform the anchoring duties each evening. The weather has been so nice we were able to raft together each time. Maybe we will talk them into meeting us on our way back north in the spring.
We had a great Albemarle crossing. Light north winds made for a perfect, if a little slow, spinnaker run. We cleared the mouth of the Alligator without issue and continued on to Tuckahoe Point for the evening. The new dinghy made for an easy run up the canal to a bulkhead for Murphy’s shore duty. We also got in a little birding for Mom. The canal was full of eagles, kingfishers, and red-winged blackbirds….and stumps. We christened the new dinghy and motor with a stump smack when I encouraged Jim a little too close to shore. Oh well, I am sure it won’t be the first time.
We enjoyed a beautiful sunset although the solitude was soon broken by run after run of jets using the ICW as a practice strafing run. The anchorage borders along the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, so I guess it is considered better to harass the birds and 4-legged animals than the 2-legged city dwellers. Oh well, we did enjoy the show, from both the eagles and the jets!
