Kirk Groehnert | Mostly sunny, occasional shower
We spent the past few days in Controllers Bay which is quite big with three different bays within. We spent a few nights in one of these bays where we met some new boater friends that know two other boats we are friends with.
It's a small community cruisers and we often bump into people that we either know or they know friends we have met. That's one of the nice things about cruising, making new friends with a common interest.
With our new friends, who happen to be from Austria, we moved to another anchorage within Controllers Bay with the plan to find a scenic waterfall. Well, this turned out to be a very muddy adventure that we eventually had to abort. It was too slippery and were going up a pretty steep mountainside. We were worried about getting back down.
Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun hiking in the mud and walking through a very small village.
Today we moved to Nuku Hiva Taioha'e anchorage which is the main anchorage and the biggest town in the Marquesas. This is one of the places you can check into the country (we checked into Hiva Oa) and a lot of boats do.
It's a cute little town with most of the major amenities necessary. On our first day here, today, we had lunch at a pizza place, or should I say THE pizza place. Not bad pizza, considering where we are. It wasn't a New York pizza but, still, it was good.
After lunch, we hiked up the hill to a hardware store that shockingly had the part we needed to get the generator up and running again. Here, the hardware store carries a little different variety, including things to fix motor scooters like bearings. We were very happy!
We will still need the replacement we ordered but at least we don't have to live without a generator while we wait.
We booked an excursion for tomorrow that goes across the island. It should be a lot of fun with lunch at a nice place.
