We left Frailes at 7am with good conditions. Set the anchor at 2pm in Los Muertos and again, went for a quick dip! After feeling reluctant to leave the last anchorage, we were relieved and awed with this picturesque bay. The beach is nestled in between rustic foothills, with a resort on one end and a cantina on the other. The hills are suprisingly green with low growing shrubby trees and saguaro cactus. Behind the beach are short dunes, and beyond that, a golf course.
School continues on the boat. Even though the seas were calm, the kids had negotiated "no school" during the crossing from Frailes to Muertos; but once anchored, they had promised to do "afternoon school" and with good attitudes. All I can say is never again. It was a bit torturous for everyone concerned to arrive at such an inviting place and have to start school. Another lesson learned.
We ended up staying at this anchorage for 3 nights due to high winds. Not a bad place to be stuck. The kids loved the snorkeling; seeing puffer fish, angel fish, and a variety of mystery fish. We enjoyed the margaritas and yummy food at the cantina. James's favorite was their version of chicken fajitas! With the exception of a dozen boats at anchor, it was pretty much deserted.
Rick and Terry's plan of an early morning tee time was not to be. While climbing into our dinghy, Terry stepped on what they think was some sort of stinging sea urchin. It was painful and bled quite a bit, but Diane was able to treat the pain with hot water and prevent it from infection. I still couldn't convince the kids to wear shoes in the water. They just looked at me like "mom..oh brother!"
By the end of the second day, the wind was howling through the anchorage 20-25 knots. The sky was still blue and in spite of the breeze, the air was still warm. We hung out on the boat most of the third day, but after consistent begging from the kids, Rick relented and took them for a bumpy dinghy ride to the beach. Everyone is happy.
The forecast was looking pretty good for our planned departure on Thursday the 11th, as the winds were expected to die down to nothing by noon. We all agreed that Puerto Balandra would be the next stop with great snorkeling, kayaking, & beach combing.
It's located 45 nautical miles from Muertos and La Paz would be a short 12 nautical miles beyond that. So we head out early that morning in hopes of reaching our destination by mid afternoon.
