Paradise discovered ... by many!
26 July 2012 | Lakka, Island of Paxos
Dan
We left Gouvia Marina yesterday afternoon after spending a few hours provisioning and working on the boat. Our 28 nm trip South to the island of Paxos finally allowed us to actually sail Interlude someplace instead of relying on the engine. We had 12-18 knot winds from the NW which allowed for a very comfortable, yet reasonably fast 4 hour broad reach down to Paxos. The last hour in particular was ideal - after clearing the south side of Corfu we furled the genoa, hauled out the jib and averaged nearly 9 knots on a close reach.
The bay here at Lakka is gorgeous -- bright turquoise water, sandy bottom and a picturesque town tucked away neatly on the SE end of the bay. The downside is that everyone else seems to know about this place and we're anchored (with just 1 meter of water beneath the keel) in close proximity to at least 50 other boats. This is ironic because, according to Greek mythology, Poseidon created this island by striking Corfu with his trident so that he and his wife Amphitrite could have some peace and quiet!
The swinging room is limited and we had to reposition Interlude twice last night evening shortly after dark before I was comfortable with our location. Tyler was a big help and has become quite proficient and handling the anchor deployment duties from the bow while I man the helm. Anyhow, it was a semi-sleepless night as a I set my alarm to wake me every 20 minutes to check our position relative to other boats. By 4AM the wind had settled enough that I was able to sleep soundly until 8.
Tyler has been ashore but Chris and I have not so we'll provide more details on Lakka in our next update. We're planning on spending at least one more night here, perhaps two.
