Folegandros Wedding Celebration
24 September 2012 | Enroute to Santorini
Dan 33 degrees C, 1012mb, clear skies, NE wind 15-20kts
It's 10:30 am and we're underway, heading from Folegandros to Santorini on a broad reach with 18-20 kts of wind pushing us along. Interlude is averaging about 7.5 kts SOG and the motion is gentle. We passed a 70' Oyster about an hour ago, but other than that we have this section of the Aegean Sea completely to ourselves right now. This is about as good as it gets out here and we're all enjoying the moment.
We spent last evening at anchor at Vathi, a small beachside community on the SW side of Folegandros. The entire island has just 640 full-time inhabitants and I would guess that fewer than 50 live in Vathi. But there was a wedding there last evening ... we were told just the 8th wedding of the year on Folegandros ... so the town was throbbing with energy. By 9:00 p.m there were at least 150 people on the beach, the wedding party along with many others who came either to watch or partake in the revelry. Red parachute flares were launched into the evening sky as the bride and groom arrived, and celebratory gunshots went off randomly through the evening. I took the dinghy ashore for a closer vantage point and watched from the perimeter as the bride, groom and about 30 others danced to live traditional Greek music. The dancing I observed might be described as one part ballet combined with two parts square dance. A large circle of dancers with graceful, flowing arm movements coupled with lively, precise footwork. I suspect the Greeks would cringe at that description, but I have two left feet and my descriptive abilities aren't much better than my dancing. Regardless, it was a pleasant and memorable night at anchor.
Unfortunately, we didn't have more time to linger on Folegandros because we want to spend a few days on Santorini before heading North to Paros again. I'll share thoughts on Santorini after we get settled in there.
