Arrived Kalkan

We've arrived in Kalkan and are safely tied astern in the town harbor. The ancient Lycian cities of Patara and Xanthos are nearby and we intend to visit one or both of the coming days. Our trip here took almost 6 hours and we departed last night's anchorage behind Gemiler Island around 7am after 15-20kn gusts of wind kicked up for about 90 minutes, making the anchorage considerably less tranquil than it was last evening.
We went ashore last evening and explored the Lycian and Byzantine ruins on Gemiler Island, also known as the Island of St. Nicholas, shortly before sunset. This place flourished during ancient and medieval periods and at one time it was home to 400-500 people. One of the four churches on the island was dedicated to St. Nicholas and historians believe that a great many Christian pilgrims once considered this a holy site, stopping here on their route from Constantinople and other western countries to Jerusalem and other sites in Palestine.
