"Wherever we want to go, we go. That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails; that's what a ship needs; not what a ship is. What a ship is...what the Black Pearl really is, is freedom." -Capt. Jack Sparrow
This refit has been quite involved!! It all started with the idea of pulling the mast to replace the standing rigging. Well, just as with our last boat, that has turned into one more thing...and one more...and yet one more...and... So now, replacing our standing rigging has turned into new standing rigging, new running rigging, newly painted mast, new mast steps, new spreader lights, new steaming light, a new masthead tricolor light, a new AIS/VHF antenna, new wiring/coax, new bolts, new tangs, new blocks, new chainplates, a new staysil furler, and refurbished genoa furler. We've taken John and Amanda Neal's advice: make your boat an unstoppable force.
There's still things to be done before we cast off in less than a month. We will be installing a new AIS transponder, new VHF radio, a WI-FI extender, replacing the BBQ grill, and need to obtain a few more engine spares, etc. Our primary source of weather routing will be using PredictWind along with renting an IridiumGO. We have guide books detailing every possible stop between Neah Bay and Mexico, and also have a tidal chart onboard. For communication, we will have an Icom IC-M802 HF/ham radio, an Icom IC-M506 VHF, a Garmin InReach, an IridiumGO, two EPIRB's, two PLB's, and an AIS transponder.
We're looking forward to stocking up the fridge, watching for good weather windows, and getting her out in the ocean where she belongs!!
