We had a couple of days of awesome weather in Savusavu. We anchored of off the Cousteau Resort to ready us for a short 25 mile trip to Kora Island. We left out in the morning with flat seas and beautiful sunny skies just motoring. We were about 11 miles away and could see the island and could also see a front that was coming. We had checked the weather and thought the front would come in during the afternoon. It was 11 am. Next thing we know we had 30-40 knot winds on the nose. Bummer. We had to tack back and forth to make our anchorage at Kora. It took us till 4pm to go those last 11 miles. We should have been in by 1. When the wind comes up quick like that the seas are steep and close together giving you the worst possible ride. Janet and I both got thrown across the boat a couple of times. The anchor pulled off the front and was dragging in the water and I had to go up to get it back on the boat. That was a bit dangerous as the bow would go up to about 15 foot above the water and then plunge into the water and just about drag me off. It just kept doing it over and over while I hung on and tried to get the anchor back on board. Fortunately only about 4 feet of chain went out with it. It seemed everything went wrong when we were trying to come in through the reef. GPS went down, Radar went down. The engine started loosing power. The wind went to 40 knots and a squall came in and was raining and blocking our visibility. I was wet, cold and shivering as we entered the lagoon. But by the grace of God we made it in. We were never really in great danger as Kairos can handle all of that it just makes it miserable on the body.

We had met a guy named Doug from Hawaii that lives on this Island and he has a great mooring that we were able to hook up as his sailboat is getting worked on in Savusavu. When we got in here we saw another boat that had broke loose and was up on the reef. It was a bigger Their were about 10 Fijians out there with a big power boat working in the storm to get it off. They did. It was quite a heroic effort to say the least. We are going to stay here for a few days till the wind and waves go down. It is another beautiful Island paradise. Shalom, Clint

Vessel Name: svkairos
Vessel Make/Model: 38 Island Packet
Hailing Port: LV NV
Crew: Clint, Janet, Joel, Colin and Abbey
About:
The Glenny family has been cruising since 2000. We started with all five of our children aboard a 50ft. Jeanneau in Tortola and sailed for 8 mos. covering all the islands from Puerto Rico to Grenada. [...]
Extra: We fish everytime we are underway. We always catch plenty and keep alot of fish frozen to have on hand. We like to scuba dive and have a compressor and tanks on board. Kairos is a great boat, very sea worthy and we would recommend Island Packets to anyone.

If it is going to happen, it is going to happen OUT THERE!
