Lagos

Hi Mom, The boat is actually floating, in water, in a marina in Lagos. We made it in to the marina within a few minutes of our predicted time on the high tide on Wednesday afternoon. We motored the whole way so the sails have yet to be unloaded. Had a few adventures. The first leaving Lisbon. There was [...]

Another beautiful day in Cascais

Hi Mom, I worked hard all day on the boat and took a small break to paddle to the praia. These poor girls were on a boat with a couple of guys and a few more of their girls friends. I could see they were running out of things to do and, since they had cerveja, I let them use my stand up paddle board for a while. The captain, Miguel, sent me this photo, so I could show how nice I am to help them enjoy their day. Just another example of the nice people you can meet on boats.

Mosquito Coast

Hi Mom,

29 September 2017

In Cascais, Portugal - since Sept 22!

Hi Mom, Kathryn sent out a safe arrival message but you are correct in that I have not put a new blog entry in. I typed several during the 6 days at sea but could not ever get a HF radio connection to transmit them.

HF radio version

Hi Mom, FInally got a radio contact and so this is mainly a test. We did have a discussion with the immigration guy here at the marina. There is some more latitude than we thought but we are still looking. Have not had much from Lauren lately. Some conversation with Phoebe.

Leaving the Azores tomorrow - hopefully

Hi Mom, after 3 months in the Azores we will attempt to sail to Lisboa tomorrow. Should take about a week. Boat is topped off with fuel as we anticipate lighter conditions until about 200 miles off the Portuguese coast. Will try to update with the radio if I can remember how. Love Tommy

Velas - we are not leaving tomorrow

13 July 2017
Hi Mom,
I went scuba diving today. It was good to go diving again. I wore the biggest wetsuit they had. Not a great deal of sea life where we went. May go another time if we stay longer. It was 45 euros to go including all the gear which is about half the cost in the US.

Went to the Port Captain to see if there was a good spot in the marina in Angra on the island of Terciera. There were spots but boats were leaving due to swell in the marina so I told the Captain we are not leaving yet. This is maybe the third time I have told him this in the last week. We are getting to know Velas and the island better and still like it so we may stay until the watermaker I ordered from Italy arrives at the end of the month.

We had a party on the boat with some of the other folks in the marina. It was a success with a good dent in our beer supply.

I think we may stay in the Azores until mid August and then go to Lisboa or maybe Porto.

Kathryn did put a picture of the Bull on a rope in the last post. They used the crane to make an area on the dock for bull and people to interact out of shipping containers. Everyone including women with strollers climbed on them and watch the few brave souls play with the bull. They had 3 different bulls. The first and last were pretty interested in chasing people. There was some effort to try and get the bull to fall into the water but not this day. It is reported to be very traumatic for the bull so I am glad. From a distance it looked like people playing with a really big dog with horns but I had no desire to try myself. I went earlier than Kathryn. When she came to find me she managed to get inside the "play" area and walked by some boxes. She was very surprised to hear and feel bulls trying to get out of them. She reported the feeling of great power. She and all the other females retreated before the signal that bull release was coming.
