Hill Country!!!

11 December 2012 | Kerrville, Texas
Walt/Sunny/Cold
OK...so I've been lax in reporting our progress. The long driving days and the desire to get across Texas ahead of any winter storms has been driving us. Pun intended!

After leaving El Paso we entered more high desert country very similar but flatter than Ariz & NM. Fort Stockton, out in the middle of mostly nothing provided us with a small, but adequate overnight spot. We have adopted a new rule... 250 miles or 2:50 in the afternoon. Achieve either one and it's time to stop! That makes for a long day, but we gotta get across Texas.

Next on our schedule was Kerrville, Texas. A small town in the center of Texas geographically, situated on the Guadalupe River. It's in an area of beautiful, rolling hills, hence the name "Hill Country". It's a small town of about 20,000 folks and the place Nancie lived for a couple of years about 15 years ago. Just outside the town are several ranchers who have imported some exotic antelope-like creatures from Africa to enhance their farms. See photo. A nice friendly town and wonderful campground. I'd say the best we've been in. Not the fanciest, but the best overall. And nice folks everywhere. This could be a permanent spot for us, but it's too far from the ocean or at least a bass fishing lake! We have stayed 4 nights here enjoying catching up on doing nothing. Our arrival coincided with an arctic front coming to town. We stayed nice and warm inside. In spite of the nighttime temps going down to 20 deg, the days were in the mid 60's and sunny. Found a great BBQ spot for lunch one day.

On the first day here we noticed lots of signs throughout town saying "Go Johnny Go", or "Congrats Johnny". Not knowing what was going on I went on line and guess what???...the 2012 NCAA Football Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M played high school football here just a year ago. It was announced just a couple of days ago. He's also the first freshman to ever win the award. Small town Texas football. Greatest game in the world!.

Tomorrow we head for a couple of days in San Antonio before heading for the Gulf Coast and Corpus Christi. Stay tuned.
