We've dropped the mooring!

Sally - Sunny and bright
We wanted to be up and out early so we set the alarm for 6:00 AM. First order of the day check the weather to insure the forecast had not changed for the next few days. While the wind was not perfect ,out of the east and maybe a bit out of the south, which would be on our nose until we rounded the bend where the route becomes more northerly. Winds were predicted to be about 10 knots with seas of less than one foot. This was a good window to escape and from the sound of yesterday's cruisers net we would not be alone out there. It took us every bit of an hour and more to get ready first task take India into shore, a very important walk, as she would not be getting shore leave tonight with no place to take her at Rodriquez key. We had to turn in our laundry and shower cards, dump the last of our trash and recyclables. Back at the boat the dinghy motor had to be lifted and attached to the mount on the rear rail. The dinghy lifted to the front deck , deflated and rolled up for transit. The life raft and ditch bag were put at the front of the quarter berth where they could be easily reached if needed, ports and hatches secured and coffee made. Anything that could become a projectile had been secured the day before. The Captain started the engine and we were ready to slip the lines of the mooring we had been on the last 3+ months. I was on the helm as Scott freed us of the mooring and we were on our way by 7:30 AM. Farewell Boot Key we had a great season! We negotiated out of the mooring field into the channel and reversed the path we took in January headed toward Rodriquez key. We had two power boats and a sailboat ahead of us as we headed out into Hawk Channel. The sky was clear and blue and the water calm. There was not much wind to speak of but it did increase throughout the day so we pulled out the jib and motor sailed. What a difference from the trip down, the absence of Lobster Pots was such a great plus. We still had to keep our eyes open for Stone Crab traps and other flotsom and jetsom but with Lobster out of season it made it much easier. The trip up to Rodriquez was blessedly uneventful and we had a fabulousl day sailing. We had a bit more than 50 nautical miles to reach Rodriquez but the blessing of longer days afforded us lots of time to get there. We dropped anchor on the North side of Rodriquez key a bit after 5:30, there were about a half dozen boats in the anchorage with plenty of room and good holding. We had a lovely quiet evening on the hook, no road noise, no bar noise, no dogs barking, peace. We were off to bed early with plans of raising the hook at first light. The picture was taken as we approached the old bridge leaving the harbor

Scott and Sally met in college, married and lived the average dirt dweller life for years always somewhere near the water. We fell in love with sailing in the early 90's. Summer of 2014 we both retired and became full time cruisers. [...]
