Sailing North in Hawks Channel
27 April 2016 | Hawk Channel Florida Keys
Sally sunny with a bit of wind
Our plan today was to up anchor early and head to No Name Harbor off Key Biscayne to anchor for the night. We had never been into this harbor but had some good local knowledge on the approach from Roger and Sue (Dancin Down Wind) who have been there several times. Our trip up was a bit rolly but we were able to put up some sail although we kept the motor on so we could make good speed. Always and Forever was behind us and followed us in as we started up the channel. To reach No Name you leave the Biscayne channel between red 4 and red 6 and it can be quite shallow. We had no issues on our charted route and the Captain did an excellent job of getting us to our destination. We decided to anchor outside the harbor as the entrance is only 5 ft at low tide. At least by our charts there was some discussion between boats on that but we opted to stay out.
Setting the anchor was quite the trick as we had wind against current which was quite strong. We had to physically back up to get the anchor chain laid out straight. It took us a few tries to get it set properly. Robin and Greg had graciously offered to dingy us while we traveled together, came over and got us and we dinghied in to the harbor. We were quite shocked by how small the harbor actually was, it would be great for a hurricane hole but with little wind it was hot and breathless. The Harbor is actually part of Bill Baggs State Park and is in a lovely setting. We walked the pups and had dinner at the restaurant at the head of the harbor. We celebrated with Greg and Robin our successful sail and decided to stay an extra day to explore the park and the fabulous beach. The picture is Always and Forever with her Genoa out as we sailed to Key Biscayne.
