Getting ready for "the Season"

27 May 2016 | Stuart Fl
Sally - rain coming in
Seems odd that we are getting ready to be hauled when our friends up North are just getting launched and bending on their sails.

We pulled the jib and stay sail off this morning. Rain is expected this afternoon and we wanted to get them off before the wind picked up and the rain hit. We can't store them when they are wet. We need to get the canvas off before Light Reach is hauled which is one of the reasons we stopped here. The job is much easier to do when in the water and at a dock. We stowed them in the quarter berth which pretty much filled up the space. We keep our ditch bag and life raft in there too when we are not underway.

The picture is the view down the river from out dock. Looks like there should be a lot of water but it's surprisingly shallow with only 6 to 7 feet of water shoaling to less than 3 quite far out from shore. It doesn't seem to bother the locals as there is quite a bit of boat traffic. The shallow depth and fetch allow for a good amount of rocking and rolling when the wind picks up. We are grateful for the break wall. As I write this post the rain is moving in and we are doing the shuck and jive at the dock.

Scott and Sally met in college, married and lived the average dirt dweller life for years always somewhere near the water. We fell in love with sailing in the early 90's. Summer of 2014 we both retired and became full time cruisers. [...]
