First days in Marathon
17 December 2016 | Marathon FL
Sally / why bore you with the details?
It was well past 7 when we woke up yesterday, which is late for us. We had coffee, breakfast and picked up the boat before heading to shore. The little dingy was packed between water jugs, trash and us. We didn't get in until past 11:00. Sue and Roger had texted us and after long luxurious showers we stopped at Dancin Down Wind to catch up with them. We chatted for a good half hour making plans to go to a cruising seminar and a concert. The rest of the day was spent getting Light Reach better settled and us too. We took a second trip ashore in the evening to walk India and then it was back to the boat for a supper of stuffed shells.
Coffee in the cockpit this morning was delightful, it feels good to be back. We turned on the SSB to see if we could pick up Chris Parker's weather forecast. We were delighted to find we could and that the reception was much better than we had ever had. Hmmm shades of Sister Creeks Radio Tower interference? After breakfast, listening to the cruisers net and straightening up the boat we headed to shore to walk India. The harbor is definitely in high season, the docks are crowded and dingys buzz back and forth. We were behind Roger in his dingy to fill our water jugs with more boats behind us.
Sue and Roger had kindly offered to pick us up in their dingy and take us to a cruisers lecture today given by a couple that circumnavigated the globe in their Nordhaven Trawler. Scott and Mary spent 10 years doing that traveling all over. They spent a lot of time in very cold places, places where I am sure the Captain of this vessel would never want to go! It was interesting but there wasn't much time to ask real questions at the end. I would have liked to know what they used for navigation and if they acquired their charts as they went . I couldn't imagine having them all on board even though it was a 46 foot and a roomy trawler. The crew from Otter II was there as well and we got a warm welcome back from Fred and Karen. Roger was having some dingy engine issues so they followed us back to our boat in case it konked out. It's just about time to take Indy to shore for the evening so I will close down hoping to post these past few days when we return from shore. Life is good on Light Reach.
The picture is of the Christmas tree in the common room of the Marina. They threw a Christmas party for the harbor kids today and had them decorate the tree. The kids did a great job don't you think?
