Colder Tonight
21 April 2007 | 300 miles SE Bermuda
Karl
It is colder overnight, with more stars. The wind is slack early, but then freshens and lifts a little, close hauled full sails, making 5-6 knots good. We are less than 400 miles from Bermuda, but will probably have to tack to get there in the shifting winds.
At 0600, Robin woke me to check the bearing on a ship, which was fairly close by, crossing our bow within a mile, but not a danger.
We have a breezy day, with winds around 20 knots from the southwest, so we are close hauled and heeling. The steep seas send solid spray the length of the boat. As a consequence 1) the head backed up 2) a sail slide came loose from the mainsail and 3) knotmeter display unit somehow pulled loose from the bulkhead. We hove to for fifteen minutes to punp out the holding tank to address the first problem. I taped up the knotmeter hole with duck tape, and we dropped the mainsail long enough to tie the sail slide back in.
At 2330, Beryl is on watch and says "Ouch, I think a flying fish just bit me in the head." I think the moon brings them out.
