Half Way

We are currently a little over 900 nautical miles from the California coast and about 1200 miles (straight line) from Lahaina. The air is much warmer now and it is starting to feel much more tropical. We saw our first flying fish today just before dinner time which provided some great entertainment as there were many flying around the boat. It is quite a sight to see what basically look like large hummingbirds suddenly pop out of the water, do a little airborne turn, and then disappear back into the water! We are trying to get into the trade winds but they haven't been flowing where expected so we are going slower then we would like but still having a good time. Sounds like others in the fleet are also frustrated by this. We also celebrated getting more than half way to Maui today with a steak and prawn dinner. The dinner was intended to be more of a party then it turned out possibe because the winds were temporarily stronger at the time, but fortunately we had more o f a celebratory 'happy hour' earlier in the afternoon so we still feel like we got to celebrate the milestone sufficiently. The crew is all optimistic that we'll find the trade winds tomorrow, hopefully also bringing more sunshine and fish on the line.
