We headed for the nearest shelter, and that was Hurepiti Bay. A nice deep bay so we could pretty much make our way into its head, although some maneuvering was needed around a coral patch or two. We set the anchor, breathed a big sigh, pulled off the wet clothing, jumped into a warm shower, then followed up with hot chocolate.
And that night it blew and we felt so snug and safe.
The next day it was still blowing hard so we decided to stay put. The winds were still strong but the sun was out, so I pulled out the guitar for a bit. A catamaran went buy, scoping out the anchorage, and I wave hello. Someone aboard is pointing to the water, and shouting....'guitar case' and I instantly comprehend that the guitar bag that earlier I had washed and hung on a makeshift clothesline has taken a dive. I thanked them as I leap out of the cockpit and take a running jump, cloths and all into the drink to retrieve the dam thing. Ian comes up from below to check on the commotion.
About mid morning another boat came into the anchorage. Nothing unusual to bother about but something on board didn't seem good. We watched them for a while then they sailed by rather close. Two guys, French, the helmsman looking panicked and calling that they had engine troubles. What could we do except stand by helplessly - we were on anchor, the wind is still blowing stiff, and our dinghy tied down on the front deck. A local from a nearby pearl farm comes out in their skiff and helps them connect to a mooring buoy. And when they look somewhat settled I visit them in the kayak. The helmsman, throws me kisses and calls Merci, Merci's as I come close. But I didn't do anything... perhaps he's one of those very emotional Frenchmen...or so relieved he's alive. They tell me they have just come on a passage from Payette, on this charter boat. 'In this weather' I mumble quietly...well at least we weren't the only silly people out there. They had to sail through the pass and onto the mooring, with no motor. Got to hand it to them.... somehow. And I'll bet that ended of the sailing adventures, for one or both of them.
