Tropical Storm Danny
26 August 2009 | Delaware Bay
After emerging from the C&D canal, we had a pleasant day sailing down the Delaware bay. With good winds mostly off the beam, we made 6-8 nm/h.
There was alot of barge and cargo traffic going up and down the bay, presumably to/from Baltimore or Philadelphia. Definitely a different feel than Chesapeake Bay. It is not as green and lunch. Not nearly as many people seem to be living here. There are hardly any places to stop. Seems like everyone is just passing through to some other place.
Toward the end of the day, we found the wind dropping off and our speed slowing. It became increasingly clear we were not going to make our goal of Cape May where some packages should be waiting for us. Interestingly, there weren't any places to stop at, other than the Breakwater Harbor of Refuge, near Cape Henlopen. We decided the safest route was to go to the Breakwater rather than Cap May. Cape May had a thin inlet from the ocean, whereas the Breakwater was designed to be easy to find and get into for ships that need to get safe harbor from a storm.
Our current goal is to head to Boston for my flight September 26. We were disappointed to find that Tropical Storm Danny is taking form and heading up the East coast and expected to go by NY, which is where we were currently heading. We'll have to decide tomorrow if we should head back into Delaware Bay until Danny passes by, or wait in Cape May until he passes by. Decision time is tomorrow after we get to Cape May.
