1000 Miles to Go
16 July 2010 | Pacific Ocean
We are just passing the 2/3 mark on our passage, 1000nm left to go of the 3k to Hiva Oa in the Marquesas.
Things continue to be going pretty well. The weather was great today with the sun coming out. The seas have been fairly flat, making for a moderately smooth ride. We continue to be making 6-8kts which should bring us in (if the winds keep up) in a week or so. The sail repairs we made yesterday to our genoa seem to be holding up well. Depending on the conditions, we are expecting to pull out our spare genoa tomorrow and hoist it on the other pole so we can go wing-on-wing again, as our ballooner is totally out of commission for the time being.
Today, Dana takes up her new job as the Pac-net operator on our SSB, as the current operator is expected to make landfall tomorrow.
Dana knocked off another winch cleaning/servicing while Mark was sleeping this morning and has been stitching up a pair of Mark's favorite shorts that have developed a bunch of holes, probably from getting some chemical on them. She has been threatening to embroider pretty patterns on the shorts for Mark as part of the repair. Mark has been going through his spares inventory, updating his counts and making sure things are organized.
Mark also broke out the boat's new sextant, zeroed it in, and took his first Sun sighting. Now he is trying to make sense of all the tables and other info in the various celestial navigation books we have been reading in preparation.
