20 May 2014 | Secret Cove and Thormanby Island
sunny warm light wind
We stayed on land last night but the sunny warm weather drew us to the water. The ladies dinghy motored over to Rockwater Secret cove Resort for a lovely lunch, took a tour of the luxurious Glamping tents, then motored to Thormanby for an afternoon on the beach. Is there a more spectacular beach in the world? This picture does not do it justice.
a long motor home
19 May 2014 | South Pender to Secret Cove
no wind, warm and sunny
It is a long way from South Pender Island to Secret Cove, but there is no such thing as a bad day on the water. One of our guests described the other as a "Meerkat" in constant search of the Orcas and Humpbacks. It was flat calm. As we were searching, a disturbance in the distance either was a humpback or mimicked the behaviour of a humpback, a black hump, a long random ripple as when they roll their backs up but never really show their head. For us, it was a Humpback. We will never really know, will we? Note the photo taken of a confirmed sighting of a humpback whale in Broughton Islands 2012. this image is very similar to what we witnessed.
skunked on the whale tour
18 May 2014 | Bedwell Harbour
warm sunny light winds
Our guests have been very anxious to see whales. A sailboat can't exactly chase whales, so they paid to take a whale watching tour. They did not see the elusive giants of the water but they did have a good time.
off to South Pender Island
17 May 2014 | Bedwell Harbour
warm sunny light winds
We set off for Bedwell Harbour after a nice walk around the fabulous Ganges market where we met up with old friends and family. We motored to Bedwell Harbour , on South Pender Island and anchored. We enjoyed great food a stunning sunset on the hook, fabulous friends and a calm night.
off to Ganges
16 May 2014 | Government dock, Ganges Harbour
warm and sunny with strong winds gusting up to 25 kn.
We enjoyed our breakfast on the hook and discovered that Princess Bay, Wallace Islands does not have protection form the south winds as one would expect.. Strong gusting south winds caused many of us to draw up our anchors as our stern ties were perpendicular to the wind. We raised the hook and were off with wind on the nose to Ganges Harbour. We enjoyed a nice following wind in the harbour and were delighted to find a slip on the government dock with easy access to the market and all the Ganges shops. We were thrilled to find out that there was the most unusual circus being held in protest to the oil tankers destined to be navigating our stunning coastal waters. This protest involved artists of all sorts, but the most interesting were the acrobats performing in the rigging of the sailboat next to us!
a night on the hook
15 May 2014 | Princess Bay, Wallace Island
winds light, sunny and warm
We motor/sailed down the Strait of Gerogia from Nanaimo in search of the elusive "Orca". We fished for a while north of Porlier Pass and managed to catch a very nice ling cod. It was an impressive fish and a long warm sunny afternoon of motoring. We anchored in Princess Bay, Wallace Island where we enjoyed a stunning sunset, baked cod with lemon herb sauce and some lovely company.
