The Repair Man

19 September 2009 | Oxnard, CA
Monica
Well, where to begin since we last left off...... We moved to the Channel Island Yacht Club for 3 days and were hosted very well here, a very nice club with great drink prices at their bar! The weather has been foggy with the sun sometimes making an appearance during the late day, sometimes not, but the temperature is nice in the low 70s.

We had a couple of repairs that were required. We had our forward head pump assembly break. Scott repaired it knowing that it wasn't going to be a long term fix but the plan was to buy a spare in San Diego so when it did finally give it up we would have the spare. Well, it gave up two days later so yeah!!!!!! Working on the head two times in one week; Scott was so pleased I can't even begin to repeat the words he used to express his joy.

The second repair was to our onboard water system. The watermaker appears to be working great but we did notice that humm, we seem to be going through a lot of water and hummm, why is it that everyday there is water in the bilge? We know we had a small water leak in the tank that appeared to be somewhere in the upper part of the tank. As the tank is glassed into the hull under the teak and holly floor with only a 6 inch by 6 inch portion visible it isn't something easily diagnosed or remedied. We can see the leak as it drops into the bottom of the bilge and it appears to be a lot faster than the 2 drips a minute we had before. So, Plan B. I guess this is why we have two water tanks. The sad thing is that our 80 gallon tank is the one with the leak and our auxiliary tank is only 40 gallons but, hey at least we can fill it fast and often.

So, again with much pleasure, Scott ripped out the original plumbing he installed and re-routed the product water line to the auxiliary tank. If you know Gulfstar boats, you know this isn't easy. There is never an easy way to get from here to there and sometimes, as we discovered with our head fiasco in Everett before we left, sometimes you just can't get there from here. But, he persevered and within 2 hours we had the tank plumbed, drained of the city water and were making water to go in the tank. We are taking a wait and see attitude to see if 40 gallons will create an issue for us or not. There is always the option of installing a bladder inside of the leaking tank.

Ahhh, boats, it is such a love hate relationship.
