Feeling the joy

14 December 2012 | Mazatlan Mexico
Nicki / Overcast
Holiday season is in full swing here in Mazatlan. Virgen de Guadelupe Day was observed on Wednesday. Parents dressed their children in traditional garb and brought them to the cathedral for the blessing of the children and to have their pictures taken in dioramas setup around the church yard.

Christmas trees and manger scenes are being erected in the squares.

This evening we attended the Gala Navidena (Christmas concert) at the Angela Peralta Theater.

The orchestra and singers were beautiful and they had some fun with Santa hats, antlers and flashing reindeer noses too.

After the concert cups of soup and rice, tamales, and sugared crisps were passed out in the lobby. In the courtyard out front a pinata was hung and cracked open for the kids. It was a festive evening.

We are getting into the spirit on board as well. We put our “tree” up the other day. What better use for the mast post?

I was feeling a little crafty and combined crocheted snowflakes a friend gave me with Mexican straw stars to make fancy new ornaments for our tree. The old standby crystal snowflakes have been hung and packages are being prepared for shipping home to the kids. I dipped some dried apricots in chocolate this afternoon, which may be the extent of my goody making this year. But the spirit is in the air and we are feeling the joy.
