Shopping in Old Mazatlan
27 January 2011
Cloudy and cool

Today we left the dinghy in front of Benjis pizza on the beach, took a water taxi across the estuary and then a taxi to old Maztlan. The taxi was a small pick up truck with benches in the back. We cruised the market which had tourist junk on the streetside but inside there were a variety of stalls selling to the locals. As you can see in the picture if the face is still attached to the meat it is easier to know which is which!. There was meat, fish, poultry and fresh fruit and vegetables. Upstairs were small restaurants..... well not in the sense of what you may have expected. They are a small room with tables, and an exposed kitchen at one end. We tried deciphering the menu and asking for more information when a friendly gringo said just order its all good, and he was right everyone liked what they ate even if it was a surprise.
More shopping... what we are noticing is no one is here?
Rumor has it the cruise ships have stopped coming and I notice closed store fronts and lots of Se vend signs (for sale) Good for us becasue we don't like crowds, but bad for the local store owners. Is it American recession preventing people from having a vacation or bad press about violence in Mexico. Don't know maybe both.
Tonite I rigged a pelican deterrant which is a series of interwoven lines on deck with flags flapping in the breeze.. basically scarecrow for Pelicans
I will keep you posted if this prevents nocturnal landings of our flying fish processing plant.
