Turtle Town
16 March 2011 | Caleta de Campos
Overcast
We left Punta Cabeza Negra, and Kokomo, early Tuesday morning to travel to Campos. Ron and Connie of Intuition, had told us the only good anchorage between Manzanillo and Ztown was Campos so we were anxious to push on hopefully to a less rolly anchorage. We left before dawn and travelled all day to put anchor down at sunset in Campos. This anchorage is unfortunately MORE rolly than the one before!
All day we motor sailed through a mine field of sea turtles. These turtles are on each side of boat and barely move so we estimate thousands of turtles paddling around. They are 2-3 ft diameter shells and barely get out of the way of the boat and may just be the source of the clunks we occasionally hear on night passages!
We have read about extinction of sea turtles but not here!
In fact the sea life on each of passages always includes Whales, Dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and usually other things as well. Monday for example we traveled through a Half mile of jelly fish the size of my thumb in the millions. We have been encouraged by the amount of sea life we have seen maybe the world's oceans are not in decline! (at least for 4500miles of our experience todate)
Today is a rest day and then further south to link back up with Kokomo in Ztown.
