Lunch on a stick
23 April 2011 | La Herradura
Overcast threatening rain
Today we journeyed by dingy 4.5 miles up the estuary to the nearest town La Herradura. Saturday is market day and we had been told there would be a procession from church to church for Easter week.
We finally got moving about 8:30am and saw dugout canoes going the other way with produce so we knew we were somewhat late.
We got to the dock negotiated for someone to watch our dinghy, and started into town. This is our first town in a new country and their were differences.
Three wheeled motorcycle taxis being one, and bars on the windows of all of the buildings.
We arrived at the church as it was begining to empty... so we were late but the parish priest was whipping (scourging) all of the parishoners one at a time as they left. We were encouraged by a little old lady so we got in line for what is a central american tradition of penance before Easter. Everyone was very good natured and seemed to be pleased that we participated.
We went to the market and bought some produce and eggs.
Now I am becoming pretty good at numbers in Spanish but was stumped intially when I asked how much? (Cuanto cuesta?) The reply was uno dos qwaters??? it didnt make sense until you realize that El Salvador uses American money and what she was saying was one and two quarters
in other words $1.50 They prounounce it qwaters as if they were from Brooklyn! The name for the ice cream store was different and so is bus but we are learning.
The picture was of my lunch on a stick it looked so good I had to have one it is a Mango cut like a flower but to my surprise it was topped with salt, salsa, and a very hot spice. I couldnt eat it but I am learning.
Monday we go into the capital for a bank, some groceries and anything else we can find
