Volunteers
24 May 2011
We volunteered at a day care center last week in the afternoon after classes.
It was a chance to of course to practice our spanish and to spend some time with the kids. They seemed starved for affection and we (there was a group of 10 spanish students) talked and played games with the kids for several hours.
Kids don't seem to ever be stopped by a language barrier. It would have been fun to put a group of American kids into the mix and they would have gotten along fine. That is of course if they got over the dirt floors, and broken toys... but I don't think that would have mattered. This little girl showed me all over the facility and I gave her a ride on my shoulders which prompted every child under 10 to need the same ride. I worked on the verb subir (to go up) They also needed to be boosted on to a nearby roof to retrieve a ball over and over again!
This week our activities include Salsa dancing and a visit to a nearby Mayan village.
