Warm with rain at night
A as an after school activity Thursday we went to a near by pueblo called San Antonio which is an indegenous village. We had a demonstrantion and presentation of a traditional Mayan wedding and meal. I was chosen to dress up as the father of the groom in native garb. The women can be seen all over Guatemala in native dress but the men do not wear it becasue we are told discrimination. The wedding cermony is preceeded by about a year of making a series of handmade gifts of clothing for the bride, and mother in laws. The garmets are all hand made and we saw a simple demonstration of this. The work is incredible. It takes months to make a single garment The picture is of me doing a dance (maybe there is still hope for my dancing). Another student filmed the whole thing and said she would email it to me when she returns to Taiwan.
We had a small meal and coffee. Connie tried coffee and is hooked.
I told her going to Guatemala and not drinking coffee is like going to France and not drinking wine. With a little milk and sugar she is hooked,.
We bought an automatic coffee maker to replace the broken one in our host familily's home. They seemed pleased as everyone including the kids drink coffee.
This weekend we will not climb the volcano because of rain and connie is tired from her cold. We will take in the local museums we havent seen.
One more week and its back to boat projects.
