Whales
10 August 2011
We moved only a mile on Sunday to another anchorage, but Monday we got up and left at 8am for a 20 mile motor sail to the Isla Secas. We are presently anchored in a beautiful little cove that we share with canvas tents akin to "Yurts" These tents are for rent at $600per nite. It is private but we plan to investigate and do some snorkeling.
But the highlight of the day is the whale sightings. We had not been expecting whales this far south in Panama. We all know about the migration of whales down the west coast of the US from the Arctic to the Baja area in Mexico. In fact we saw no whales as we headed further south until today! And today was apparently humpback whales to acrobatics including a full leap clearing out of the water. This was especially surprising to me as the water was only 100ft deep. Imagine gathering enough speed to come clear out of the water with such a short run up. In fact we continued to see whales after we were anchored to cap off the afternoon of swimming in the beautiful waters. Panama continues to delight
