For the last week I've been trying to find a way to watch a hockey game here in Honolulu. As you can imagine, they can hardly spell hockey here! The only ice they see here is in their drinks. The Yacht Club has every channel available except OLN where the game is. Well, today I found a little bar, called the Harbor Bar near the marina that had a couple of TV's. They were much more interested in basketball but agreed to put on TV in the corner on Hockey. No sooner had Dee and I sat down that a couple of other Canadians heard the game and joined us. Then we heard a very loud cheer as a couple of other guys came and sat down. We had a major Canadian contingent with one token American. As it turned out one of the guys was a retired Vancouver firefighter after 26 years. As you can imagine the following conversation took a good half hour.
Two of the other guys were were hockey players, both playing in Japan now. One of them, Joel Prpic, played for Boston and Colorado in the NHL. Any hockey fan can attest that there is nothing cooler than watching hockey with professional Hockey players. Joel knew several of the players and had some great background info that you just don't get on the tube. Couple all of this with very cheap American happy hour beer and you have a great afternoon in the making. Edmonton winning was the icing on the cake.
Besides trying to watch Hockey, Dee and I have also finalized our plans for getting back to BC. As a treat to ourselves (and due to a severe lack of crew) we've hired a crew to take the boat back to BC for us. Yeah, yeah, we really felt like wimps at first for taking the easy way out. But, it's a tough trip and the stock market has been reasonably good to us so we just don't need to punish ourselves. We did sail here on our own so we feel that we've at least proved we can make a long passage. The trip home can be challenging and gets colder and colder each day. No thanks. We will make a passage again in the future but we want it to be heading South towards warmer waters. The delivery crew arrives here on June 4th and we fly out on June 8th. The boat should leave at about the same time and arrive in Victoria around the beginning of July. We'll get back on the boat then and head towards the North end of Vancouver Island for some more cruising.
Now, back to trying to deplete the liquor supply on the boat. Hey, it's not my choice! Canada customs says that I can only bring two bottles of wine into the country. That leaves us with quite a challenge!
