The first mini cruise
08 March 2013 | Winter Cove, Saturna Island
Mark Roozendaal
Other than a quick sail to San Francisco to help deliver a friend's boat, it has been a long time since I have been cruising. Sure, I race regularly on a Melges 24, but that is vastly different than short handed cruising on your own boat. I must say, it is great to be back on the water, even if we are just island hopping around the Gulf Islands. Do I feel rusty... Absolutely! I guess it doesn't help that we are on our new catamaran and I have never sailed a cat before.
Talking about sailing, these cats are sure fast! The wind was pretty light yesterday as we left Sidney, about 8-13 knots on the beam. On our last boat, Salacia, that was hardly enough wind to get moving. On Speakeasy, we were reaching along at over 7 knots. Even when the wind dropped to around 8knots, we still had over 5 knots of boat speed. I can't imagine how fast this boat is going to move when we are in a big blow. I'm already glad that I ordered a new drogue.
That's about it for now. We've got another 3 days on the boat and we're just going to be moving from anchorage to anchorage around the islands. It's a cool wet BC spring outside, but a nice and cozy 20c inside. No roughing it here!
