Boating has always been about "getting out there" and communing with nature, relaxing, getting back to the basics of a simpler existence. That all sounds great, but I am finding it easier said than done! I'm sitting in a great anchorage, but am going without cell service which means that I can't check my email, which means that I can't stay on top of my business, which means that I feel very insecure and restless.
When did this all happen? I've always had one boat or another and have spent countless days on the water, virtually all of the time without a cell phone or internet service. But somewhere along the way I became quite literally addicted to having a connection with the outside world. I feel the need to check email, see what's happening in the Ukraine, and I absolutely need to know what is going on with the sinking ferry in South Korea....
They say that recognizing the problem is the first step! Ok, I am there, welcome to step one... Maybe if I drink enough tonight I won't need to check my email.
Oh yeah, by the way, I posted this on our blog using the satellite communication system that I have on the boat. Well, maybe I'm not quite at step one.
