It will be a short blog post today as the weather is quite snarly and we are hanging on as we surf around on big waves. It is not so much fun today, but it will pass.
Just after we jibed to the south yesterday we were overtaken by two large squalls. The boat got a free washing as we did. The wind really piped up and it was a wild ride for a half hour. Luckily with all that recent practice, I am good at getting reefs in the main very quickly.
Overnight the wind continued to build and we were assaulted by several more squalls. Lucky for us, they didn't have near the punch of the first ones that we encountered.
Shortly after dark I noticed that part of the mainsail was not attached to the mast anymore. I brought it down and an inspection this morning shows that we damaged our main sail track, probably in one of those squalls. That really sucks as it is something critical that I will have to try and replace in Papeete. As well, it likely means that we can only put up very small portion of our main sail, up to the 3rd reef point, until then.
But, for now, we don't have any main up at all and are still sailing DDW in large 10+ foot following seas at 8+ knots. It is a bit nerve wracking, but Speakeasy is tracking well and the autopilot is doing its job.
The weather reports say that 48 hours from now we will have almost no wind - go figure!
