Day 1 - Marqueas to the Kauehi, Tuamotos

Mark
We just finished the first 24 hour period of this 3-4 day passage. It's been pretty windy with 17-25 knots on our port stern quarter. Much windier than expected. But, who's complaining? It's much better to be running downwind than trying to beat into these winds and seas. We covered 161 miles in the last 24 hours and have 360 miles left to go.
The last 12 hours were much faster than the first 12 hours so there is a chance that if this wind holds we may be able to make slack tide at the pass into the lagoon of Kauehi atoll on the 13th instead of the 14th. If we arrive just a couple hours late we will have to wait a whole day to go in as we need not only a slack tide, but also good sunlight overhead to see the coral heads in the lagoon. Right now we are barreling along at 8.5 knots. We need to maintain at least 7.5 knots for the next day and a half to make our deadline. That looks easy on paper, but with changes in the wind, a speed like that can be hard to maintain over such a long distance. We're going to give it our best shot!
As always on the first day of a passage, we are both exhausted. We each probably got only 4 hours of sleep last night. I napped a bit this morning, but Dee hasn't had that success yet. There is a lot of motion and noise on the boat as we reach across the 7-9 ft seas so that is definitely not helping sleep!
