Day 1 - Passage from Bora Bora to Suwarrow Atoll

We left Bora Bora yesterday at about 8am heading to Suwarrow Atoll, about 685 nautical miles away. The wind was forecast to be on the lighter side so we expect 5 days at sea. As it almost always is with forecasts, they are a little off. Instead of light wind, we have had plenty of wind, averaging about 20 knots. Since the wind is generally from behind, it is making for a fast and pretty comfortable sail. The seas are a bit confused so it is noisy onboard, but still very comfortable and flat. It's also warm and sunny so no complaints from on board!

Just out of Bora Bora, while looking for other boats, I noticed a pod of very large whales only about 50 meters to port. These were big ones! I know that they weren't Humpback whales because the dorsal fin wasn't the right shape, but I am not sure what they were. The dorsal fin was more like a dolphin would have and the whales were at least 20M long! There were at least six of them that we could see and they were too close for comfort. We headed up, slightly away from them, and started the engine for a few minutes to make some noise. They must have heard the engine because they turned slightly away from us as well.

Since then, we have been making good time, averaging nearly 7 knots. We make much better time during daylight hours than at night since we reef the sails down quite a bit so that we aren't caught unawares by a squall. Dee did have a few squalls late at night during her shift, but nothing to severe.

Yelapa is a small village on the South shore of Banderas Bay, near Puerto Vallarta. Unless you own a hummer, is only accessible by boat which gives it a nice laid back vibe

Isla Isabella is an island about 20 miles offshore Mexico, between Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. it is a nesting ground for a number of sea birds and has been the subject of several documentaries. The birds and lizards on the island have no fear of humans.

"Speakeasy" is a 2007 Manta 42 MKIV Catamaran. We purchased her in 2013 from the original owners. Manta's come fairly well equipped from the factory for offshore cruising. We will be adding the rest of the necessary equipment.
