Sailing!
14 July 2012 | Half Moon Bay, CA
JoLe & KC Wilson
We left Emery Cove Marina (Emeryville/SF) this morning right on time so we didn't have any issues with depth leaving the harbor! We decided to motor out of San Francisco Bay rather than sail due to all of the other sailors in the Bay, 150 swimmers, plus kayaks, in a race, tourist and fishing boats, not to mention the tugs and other vessels on the water, oh and the wind was in our face! Once clear of the Golden Gate Bridge though we put up the jib and mainsail and turned off the motor and sailed all the way to Half Moon Bay, with Kris even taking a turn at the helm. Kris hasn't been on the boat since 2007 and a lot has changed so it's kind of interesting to see the boat through new eyes. Unfortunately the weather is still quite cool, 57 degrees was the high and somewhat overcast, but all and all nice to just sail and listen to the boat cutting through the waves!
Oh! Almost forgot. Probably one of the more amazing sights we've seen. We're sailing, I'm on lookout and I see a swath in the ocean where there are no wind waves, it's calm, plus it's a different color, slightly murky, and we're coming up on it fairly fast. I mention it to KC and Kris, they look at it and are thinking that it's some tidal flow possibly. At this point we're in it and I look down, and no, it's not tidal flow, it's big jelly fish, LOTS and LOTS of jelly fish, one on top of another, it was absolutely amazing! We've never seen anything like it out in the ocean. Also saw a few dolphin plus a seal or two.
