Our trip to Ensenada, MX
05 March 2012 | Puerto de Ensenada
At 3:30am, we left our slip, at Cabrilla Isle Marina, for the very last time. We waved goodbye to the San Diego City front, all while feeling excited about the day ahead. We raised the main and motored through the channel, past Point Loma, and into the Pacific Ocean. Because the moon had already set, the sky was clear with great views of the stars. The early morning air was brisk so a few layers of clothes were needed to stay warm.
The sun began to rise around 5:30am, bringing us a little warmth and a slight breeze. We motored into Mexican waters around 6:00am! Hola Mexico!!! For breakfast, we had chicken noodle soup; a meal that is a staple item while cruising on Tanga, when cold.
Around 8:30am, out of nowhere, a strong offshore wind built. Hooray, we get to sail! We turned Ethel off and thanked her for her hard work. With a full jib and main flying, we were sailing at 7.0 knots. The mainmast began to pump, which means too much air for us, so we furled the jib a bit and everything settled down to a very smooth sail. I'll tell ya, when we get some good winds (15+knots), Tanga sails like a dream. Our top sailing speed hit 7.6 knots, which is a fast speed for Tanga. Unfortunately, as quickly as the winds built, they died just as quickly. When we saw our speed hit 2.9, we furled the jib and turned Ethel back on for some motor sailing.
Sometime around 11am, the winds picked back up, except this time they had clocked around and were now coming from the west. With a full main and jib, we sailed along at 5 knots for a few hours as the wind moved to the stern. About the time we were 20 miles from Ensenada, the winds died again, we turned on Ethel for the last time of the day.
We motored the rest of the afternoon into Puerto de Ensenada with warm temperatures and sunny skies. We arrived at our designated end-tie around 4:30pm. After tiding up the boat a bit, we enjoyed homemade pizza for dinner, which was a spot hitter for both of us. We watched a movie and we were both sound asleep before 8:30pm.
