Since it's a new chapter in our family adventure, it seemed like good time to change the look of our blog. Gone is the "Capt Rich" by-line, to be replaced by the more descriptive "Live-A-Board Bozo Hobo Rich".

In what's turned out to be an amazing welcome home party, Humpbck Whales have been feeding daily in the mooring field. We have been sprayed by whale breath and splashed as the whale feast on sardines, as the whales make their way South to Baja Mexico for the winter.

After only 5 days here on our mooring, it's certainly way too early to make any type of sweeping judgements about how we will like it here, but this morning the kids and I were talking about how much the last few days has felt like being in a really great anchorage. All that could change from the kids perspective tomorrow because they catch the school bus at 7AM in Avila Beach and will spend their first day at school in 4 years! If we can last out the weekend without turning tail and running back to Mexico then we are well on our way to surviving the first critical test of living in the States...the kids and school!

Life on a boat and the things that can happen haven't changed just because we are now safe from the Mexican drug cartels or random crime of Mexico (ahem). Just yesterday, we were all in our partially sinking and falling apart Walker Bay Genesis dingy and half way out from the pier to our boat the engine died. We of course had no oars, and it was at that time we realized we also had no life jackets or VHF radio aboard. So we rolled up our sleeves and sung "Row, Row, Row, Your boat" as we hand paddled the dingy back to the boat laughing and splashing each other with the cold California water.
