Groceries and Potluck

23 November 2008 | With the Day taken up by reprovisioning a potluck was the perfect end to the day

Jason and I rode our folding bikes to the market in the morning and carried back two milk-crate baskets full of provisions. On our way back, we stopped at Super Pollo our favorite chicken restaurant here in La Paz for lunch. As we were biking back to the boat, we passed Lori and some other cruisers that were walking to the car rental facility for a larger grocery store run. By the time Jason and I got back to the boat, we had biked a little over 4 miles, had a great tour of La Paz, and our butts hurt! It was nice to get some items back into our empty ice box so that meals wouldn't just be comprised of things from a can! I spent the remainder of the day doing small boat projects in between chatting with other cruisers on the dock. It's hard to be working out on the deck of the boat because you end up having a 15 minute conversation with everyone that walks by the boat.

Amy and Miya did some baby sitting following their homework and earned $4 each. Yes yesterday was Sunday but boat school knows no day of the week! School typically runs 2 to 3 hrs a day, which is plenty of time to cover material that would take 7 hours in the typical public school. Some of the reasons are obvious due to the direct one-on-one attention, but another reason is our ability to cut out the useless fluff material that is mandated by the State and suck down so much of the class day's time. The girls have already set up babysitting work for today and are busy converting their dollars into Pesos!

One US Dollar is worth 13.7 Pesos here on the street, so right away our dollar has some serious increased buying power over our trip here last year when the exchange rate was $1US to $10 Pesos.

The kids just set out to Bay Wolf for school and Lori is about to pull me up the mizzen mast to check out our radar dome. I hope to find a lose wire to easily get our radar working again, because if an easy fix doesn't cure the problem we may be traveling without radar until someone comes down to visit.
