Back Home in La Paz
08 December 2008 | 3000 Miles later, I'm back home on THIRD DAY in La Paz
Capt Rich
The rental car is now returned with the odometer showing 3000 more miles than when I picked it up 8 days ago. The second leg of the trip was perhaps the easiest with regards to driving, but still difficult because by this time, my rear end had already driven 2500 miles and I had the anticipation of being HOME!
The next few days will be spent finding room for all the items I carried down and reinstalling the v-drive and radar unit. Our "plan" is to leave La Paz around the end of the week and make way for the Mexican mainland. We are not in any particular hurry, but we never intended to spend this much time in La Paz and are eager to get out exploring again.
It's hard to get moving today and maybe the 88 degree temp has something to do with that, but I am also still tired from the drive and have already pushed back the v-drive reinstall from today until...well....until I have the energy to do it, which is what cruising is all about really. Throwing away the timetables and deadlines of everyday life and realizing that not only is nothing lost by not getting projects completed today, but more often than not things are gained by slowing down and stopping that "now, now, now" rush. So at the moment, the v-drive is sitting on the cockpit sole serving as a conversation piece as our friends stop by to either welcome me back, or to pick up items I carried down from the States.
In the end, I made it safely 3000 miles on a two lane Mexican road, through 12 military checkpoints, wasn't trampled at Costco or Walmart while back in California, and Lori didn't pack up and fly home while I was away, so in the final analysis, the event goes down as a complete success. Except for that incident with the contraband wine and the military police, but let's stay focused on the positive, shall we!
