Monday 11 February.
Waves are a strange thing, in one way they are mesmerising, rising, swelling and breaking; In another way they are motivating, driving both your heart and body closer to dry land. It was in these conditions that I finished reading my book, the hobbit and so looked up from endless descriptions of green forests to the beauty all around.
The sun rose on my watch this morning, to gentle waves, only to increase with vigor and wind to a rocky swell. And so perhaps the gentle waves and beating sun that reminded us of the tropics ends here, and bravely into the cold southern seas we finally venture. As of lunch, when I am writing this, a gentle cold drizzle has set in, following sightings of two sperm whales and large albatross. The wind is still constant and the food and company are good, indeed a 36 hour run of a spinnaker is fantastic.
Watches continue with chatting and laughter and music. Spirits are high and the supply of chocolate seems endless. Another exciting sailing day.
Saw two Sperm Whales - difficult to get photos - but they were close on the Starboard beam and we have started to have the company of a pair of albatrosses
Just 270nm to Doubtful sound.
