SV Why Knot- No plan, no schedule, no destination.

The passing of my life mate has ended the cruise of Why Knot. Thanks to those that followed her voyages. It gave us wonderful memories and a heck of a life

Dreams in Works

Who: Bear (Jo) and Bligh (Howell) Cooper and Scurv
Port: Port Aransas, Texas
Our greatest challenge was to actually bring in the dock lines at our home port and get going. Next came the actual act of living aboard which is way different than weekending or the occasional extended sail. This is life avoiding causing your mate to drop stuff or run into bulkheads. This is having so much stuff aboard that one has to inventory. This is life without land transportation in strange places. This is meeting folks and hating to say good bye, then looking forward to the time when courses cross again, to the surprise of seeing them at some unexpected place.

Misty Cats Breath

Cruising is not life in the fast lane. The water world challenges and focuses the senses in a way similar to camping. Through hatches and portlights in the boat, we can observe the environment in which we float. Our space is always moving and we adapted to it welcoming the advantage of sleeping in motion. We can change the boat atmosphere very quickly and easily by simply opening the boat to the winds. We have been surprised by sudden downpours, which can bring one from deep sleep to upright consciousness when the rain hits us in the face. Since it has rained almost every day since we returned to the boat, we closed the overheads before retiring. The co-alpha males on Why Knot were awakened very early yesterday morning by rain pelting the hatch directly over our berth. Since there was no thunder, Scurv wiggled back to sleep. I stayed awake to watch the rain as it diminished into a heavy mist. The low light of the harbor revealed the droplets forming little puddles on the hatch. The sound became a “white sound” so soothing and almost imperceptible. There was very little wind and the combination of wind and rain made it a far better experience than the dream just prior. Neptune’s artwork on the hatch was dynamic; beads of water ever changing. Bear did not stir. Scurv joined her in the dream world and shortly thereafter, I joined them. Those puddles were still there in the early morning light; still dancing and changing. It was poetry in motion to a gentle rocking motion.

Why Knot left Texas in January of 2010 bound for no particular harbor. We made ports of call all around the Gulf Coast to the Keys then north up the Atlantic Coast and to the Abacos.
