C & D Canal
June 3, 2013
At the top of the Chesapeake Bay there is a 12 mile long canal that connects the Chesapeake to the Delaware River thus making it possible to save a huge amount of time heading along the coast. The ditch is 450 feet wide and is operated by the Corps of Engineers. It will take ships up to about 860 feet in length so it is possible to encounter sea-going ships whilst in the ditch. It reminds me of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel in our home waters. The current can reach three knots so one is wise to mind the tide tables.
We are leaving Annapolis early tomorrow bound for Chesapeake City in the C&D Canal. Tomorrow will be a fairly short sail. We will sail to Cape May on Wednesday unless roaming natives in Chesapeake City capture us. Cape May is our first New Jersey destination. From there we can do an overnighter to Sandy Hook or stop mid way in Atlantic City. We have not decided that yet. We have a three-day window of good weather in which to do some easy sailing.
The picture is of a spectacular line of thunderstorms approaching the Annapolis harbor yesterday.
